Life science lead qualification company looking for person with an advanced degree in the Biological Sciences, having laboratory experience in the area of genomics, assay development or proteomics (M.D.s, diagnosticians or clinicians, please do not apply)
and some sales/marketing experience. The specialist will carry out sales lead qualification through telephone conversations with researchers and pharmaceutical executives.
Candidates will:
*Have professional 'sales call' conversation skills;
*Possess significant fluency in English. Speaking proficiency in Western European languages a plus;
*Have experience in the sales process and know how to qualify researchers for sales representatives;
*Have excellent computer skills: fluent with Excel, Word, Email and web browsing;
*Own a computer, a land line or VoIP telephone;
*Be an efficient telephonist, being able to make 20 call attempts an hour;
*Have great attention to detail and have the ability to record conversation notes
Candidates with a Bachelor's degree will be considered if their lab experience and sales experience is broad.
Additionally, it is expected that regular communication occur between Compass and the specialist through telephone and email so the candidate must be available to discuss projects at regular intervals during the week. Hours are very flexible between 7:30 AM and 5:30 PM Central Time, Monday through Friday; hours per week dependent on number and type of projects, but are usually between 15-30 hours a week, with the possibility of more work if it is available and desired. The work and training is carried out from the applicant's home. This work is a '1099' or 'subcontract' role and is project-based. Responsibilities:
*Review client specifications and approved fabrication drawings and verify compliance with quality and fabrication requirements
*Conduct supplier quality audits
*Perform weld inspection and audit weld documentation
*Witness factory acceptance testing of equipment
*Audit fabricators' documentation packages for traceability and regulatory compliance
*Communicate daily with clients and project teams regarding project status
*Complete clients' commissioning, qualification and validation documentation in accordance with good documentation practices
*Write detailed technical reports
*Maintain inspection equipment (personal tools) and manage shared equipment requests for inspection execution

Business problem:
Drug development companies face huge challenges and failures are costly. Many drug development companies working on novel therapies are in the startup phase, where costs and successful results are most critical. Many of these companies
have recognized the critical need to use computers to help them sort thru the mountains of data they are generating. The use of bioinformatics algorithms allows biotech companies to manage and analyze data generated from their research and focus their efforts on the most promising candidates. Bioinformatics can help minimize the cost of drug design and make success more predictable.
A significant problem for startup biotech companies is that bioinformatics technology is expensive and complicated; it requires workers with specialized knowledge who are difficult to find. I see many ads here looking for bioinformatics IT people from early stage biotech companies that are starting up with the improving economy.
These smaller startup biotech companies often do not have large IT staff to maintain powerful computers that run bioinformatics algorithms which are initially expensive and become quickly obsolete. Further, traditional IT departments can be difficult for scientists to work with. The common perception of them being overly restrictive is because they frequently don't understand the work of the scientists and thus don't understand how to best provide services to meet their research needs.
The solution:
This service is designed for scientists at smaller startup biotech companies involved with drug development or DNA sequencing, which need an experienced bioinformatics person and superior computing platform to help them successfully and securely get their project running in the cloud. I have the necessary knowledge and Amazon, the pioneering Internet company we are all familiar with, provides the superior platform thru their AWS EC2 cloud computing service designed to support Life Science research.
Bioinformatics in the cloud can allow startup biotech companies to have the same computer power and competitive success as the largest biotech companies.

I have invested thousands of hours learning and configuring many bioinformatics applications such as BLAST, ClustalW, Glimmer, GlimmerHMM, Critica, tRNAscan, transTerm, Artemis and probably a hundred more. I have written several custom applications myself. The magic of cloud computing allows me to take a snapshot of configurations when I get them working and scripts to automate things which allows me to deploy these snapshots and scripts on your project with minimal fuss.
The timing of the service can be used in several ways. For example, if the project scoping meeting is held near the end of the week, the cloud computer can execute the desired algorithm on your data over the weekend, then the results will be ready to review at the beginning of the following week and for you to use in your continued research.
Alternatively, the project scoping meeting can be held near the beginning of the week. This allows the cloud computer to crunch on your data and execute the chosen algorithm or algorithms on your data during the business week with the results available for review at the end of the week. The advantage of this model is that intermediate results can be made available to researchers or other algorithms as soon as they are ready throughout the business week. An example of this would be in high throughput sequencing or screening pipeline scenario where many machines and computers are involved, each doing their piece of work and then handing off the results to the next stage of the pipeline in an automated fashion.

In reviewing the different EC2 instances that Amazon is offering I have determined that the High-Memory Extra Large Instance represents the best value in terms of price vs performance for general purpose high performance bioinformatics cloud computing.

If your are familiar with Amazon EC2 you may also be aware that they offer many different EC2 instance types such as Extra Large Instance or High-CPU Extra Large Instance which tradeoff the amount of memory and the number of CPU cores available at a similar price point. GPU and Cluster instances are also available which provide even higher levels of performance if your application requires it. Also available are Elastic Map Reduce and Hadoop which are algorithms which implement the age old strategy of divide and conquer to solve big data problems.
